Home > SIMPact > Go Opportunities > Women WOMEN MINISTRIES Women make up more than 50% of Kenya's population, yet they are oppressed with many social issues. Since they are expected to help at home, many of them quit school at a young age before learning to read. Once a woman is married, she is expected to work on the shamba (farm) and carry heavy burdens such as large containers of water each day. Although some marriages are good, many are very much unlike a fairy tale. The husband often does not consider it a problem to be unfaithful to his wife, and because of this, many women are exposed to AIDS. In addition, in some circles men are allowed to have numerous wives, and it is not uncommon for a man to leave his wife and children. The woman is then responsible to find a way to provide for her family. Women who are unmarried still deal with many of these issues. The rate of rape is high in Kenya and the woman is responsible for any child born out of wedlock. Women in Kenya have hard lives and need to know that Jesus cares about THEM. Jesus ministered to many women, often of disreputable character...the woman at the well, the prostitute, and adulteress. Each entered into the presence of the Son of God a downtrodden sinner and left with the joyful realization they were loved by God. Although we often can't change their circumstances, we can share God's hope and love with them. ![]()
