THE TOURIST THING

Our primary purpose as SIM Kenya missionaries of any length of term is to obey and serve the Lord on our assignments here in Kenya. And any such service must include rejoicing in the amazing aspects of creation uniquely revealed in Kenya. Ministry is and must always be primary, but it would be a shame to come to Kenya and not explore some of this great country.

Because of the large number of tourists coming to Kenya each year, there are many, many resources available in print and online. Lonely Planet and Rough Guide are but two very good examples amongst many.

If you are a student, be sure to bring your student ID. This will greatly reduce your entrance fee to game parks and other attractions. If you are not a student, but are between the ages of 18 and 26, you can apply for an internationally recognized youth ID that operates in much the same way. Http://www.isecard.com/isecard/about.html tells how to get this money saving card as well as where it can be used internationally. The cost is about $25 USD, but you will save at least that much on a three day safari. However, if you already have an ID card from your school, it is not a necessary purchase this one as either will work equally well.

Kenya has numerous game parks, even one right within the city limits of Nairobi. Safaris typically range from half a day to three days. In addition to the game drives available in the savannah, Mombasa lies on the coast of the Indian Ocean filled with promises of snorkeling, scuba diving, catamarans as well as turquoise waters and white sandy beaches. If climbing and hiking are more to your interest, Mt. Kenya is only about four hours drive from Nairobi.

If you are planning to do some traveling, make sure that you bring the extra funds to do so, and that you plan your time accordingly. Many of the ministries offer chances for travel, and the Hazards are happy to help arrange extra excursions. They are often able to coordinate with others interested in an adventure or locale which helps to keep the total cost lower.
