Moss) The Nairobi National Museum does a good job of reflecting the many facets of the country. On a pleasant site overlooking the Nairobi River , the complex comprises the Snake Park, the Louis Leakey Center and Herbarium. The exhibition halls have mammal, marine, geology, ethnography, prehistory, bird and insect and lots more. The Railway Museum is a cool lofty building alive with memorabilia of the engineering feat with linked the Indian Ocean to Lake Victoria and on the way gave birth to Nairobi. Outside, great steam locos of yesteryear slumber in retirement and tolerate the scrambling of enthusiasts. The Karen Blixen Museum was opened at the same time as the film, “Out of Africa” was premiered in Nairobi in 1986. It is an interesting place to visit in the nearby community of Karen (just outside Nairobi) The Giraffe Sanctuary in Langata is devoted to a small group of Rothschild giraffe rescued from near Eldoret. They differ from the Masaai species in the nearby National Park. The building facilitates eye-to-eye confrontation and hand-feeding of these fascinating creatures. >The Arboretum was established in 1907 on a forty hectare site within Nairobi. There are a great range of tropical, native and exotic species grown for the enjoyment and interest of the public. This is a great place for a picnic. The David Shedrick Animal Orphanage is an easily appreciated home to animal orphans. Check with someone about the hours before going. Feeding time is 11:00 daily. The Norfolk Hotel deserves, and indeed has, a whole book (Nairobi’s Norfolk Hotel by Jan Hemsing) to itself because it is practically as old as Nairobi. In attractive red brick surrounding a courtyard joyous with bird song, the Norfolk has no piped music and is something of an institution. The Nairobi National Park can be visited between 6 AM and 6PM. The illusion of wilderness is fairly well preserved provided the visitor ignores distant views of metropolitan high-rises. All game animals are present except the elephant. That main gate (73) is 8km from the city center on the Langata Road. Here also is an Animal Orphanage and a Safari Walk, a tree-height walkway winding between some of the orphanage enclosures and the park proper. Ranger’s Restaurant, located at the park, is a good place to eat. The Bomas of Kenya is a splendid amphitheater, venue for afternoon performances by traditional dancers and musicians. Among the trees nearby are examples of tribal domestic architecture. The City Market, located downtown, has a convenient position and a very wide and attractive range of wares. You may certainly practice your bargaining technique! This gives you an idea of some of the things to do and see right in Nairobi. To find out more information about location, hours and prices, start with the A-Z book and asking others. Enjoy! |
