PHOTOGRAPHY & EQUIPTMENT

You can’t take pictures everywhere, but we will tell you more about that when you are here. For now, you need to know that picture taking is prohibited in the airport. You may see some others taking pictures in and around the airport, but that doesn't make it legal. Many tourists come through Kenya and the authorities are often lax, but not always.

If you are bringing a digital camera, bring some writeable CDs (CDR, you don't need rewritables) as well. You will receive help to download the pictures from your camera and store them on the server. And, if you are willing, your pictures will be copied into our digital library program so that we can share them with each other. In return you will have thousands of photos to choose from and to take home with you.

Those who are going to be based outside of Nairobi may consider bringing an extra memory card or two for their camera, so that you can still take plenty of pictures between downloads. A few SIMPacters have brought their notebook computers along and downloaded their pics to the computer. This works, but you may not want to bring a notebook just for pics. E-mail us if you have any questions.

If you only have a film camera, there are good places to get your film developed here, but the cost may be higher than you are used to. Reprints (and probably first prints) have dropped to Ksh25 each, down from Ksh35 each.

Theft is a significant problem here, particularly in Nairobi (locally nicknamed "Nairobbery"). We will give you some guidelines and rules to help keep you and your stuff safe.
