CURRENCY

Kenya uses the Kenyan Shilling as it's official currency, abbreviated as Ksh. You can exchange your foreign money for Kenya Shillings at many points in Kenya including the International Airport, but you may not need to. The SIM Kenya office can handle changing your money and usually the rate is a bit better than the "bureau de change"s and the banks.

If you are bringing US$, then it is recommended that you bring most of it in large bills ($100s and $50s) as the banks typically give a better rate. Also, newer bills are better as many older bills (pre-2000) have been counterfitted and are often not accepted.

ATM cards are widely used here as well. Bank cards that display the Visa or Master Card logos are typically usable and other cards may be usable as well. You may want to check with your banking institution for further information. ATM cards usually offer a slightly better exchange rate than cash.

Exchange rates

The exchange rates are ever fluctuating, so a firm rate of exchange cannot be given here. However, during 2005, the rate was in the range of Ksh70-75 to the US$. You may want to go to one of the online exchange sites to get up to date information. A few of them* are listed here:
